- 7 WondersEveryone chooses a card at the same time, then reveals and plays it together. There is no single starting player in normal play.
- 7 Wonders DuelThe rulebook simply says to choose a first player; it gives no method. That player starts the Wonders selection and begins Age I.
- City of HorrorGive the First Player token to whoever looks most like a zombie. That player moves a character first during the Character Movement phase.
- Ghost StoriesThe most recent person to watch a kung-fu movie starts. Turns then proceed clockwise.
- Just OneRandomly choose a player to be the first active player. That player draws the first card while the others write clues.
- Last BastionWhoever most recently defended a person or an honorable cause takes the first turn. Continue clockwise.
- SecretsUse the rulebook's joke criterion—most recently abducted by the CIA or KGB—or choose the starter randomly. Continue clockwise.
- Spooky TowerUse the game's playful criterion: whoever most recently saw a ghost starts. Play then continues clockwise.
- Stupefy!Whoever was the best notetaker at school becomes the first round's Favourite. That player announces and manages the phases.
- Terror in Meeple CityWhoever gives the most convincing giant-monster impression starts. Take turns clockwise after that.
