- Art DeckoThe person the group considers the best artist starts. If that cannot be decided, the rules let the players choose another selection method.
- Beyond the SunThe person who most recently went to space starts.
- ButterflyThe person who gives the best impression of a real hedgehog starts.
- Chateau RoquefortThe group chooses a starting player using any method it prefers.
- DominionFor a fresh game, choose the starting player randomly. If you just played Dominion and it was not a tie, the previous winner goes last; the player to their left starts.
- Dominion: IntrigueChoose the starting player randomly. If you just played a game of Dominion that did not end in a tie, the previous winner plays last and the player to their left starts.
- For Crown & KingdomThe first player to make a trumpet sound and announce themselves as the starting player starts.
- HamburgumThe person who most recently visited a church starts.
- HookyThe person most recently in a classroom starts. The rules also allow choosing a starter randomly.
- RaPlayers randomly decide who gets which group of Sun tiles; the player with the highest-numbered Sun begins. Play then continues clockwise.
- Race for the GalaxyNobody goes first. Each round, all players secretly choose an action card at the same time and reveal them together, then everyone performs the chosen phases.
- Roll for the GalaxyThere is no first player: everyone plays each round at the same time. Only when strict timing matters, a phase is done in clockwise order starting with the player whose faction tile has the lowest number.
- TobagoThe person who most recently visited an island starts.
- Trans-Siberian RailroadThe person who most recently visited Russia opens the initial auction, unless the group agrees on another method.
- ZoolorettoThe players agree on who starts.
